Two Cats Tuesday: The State of Pimpin'

Happy Two Cats Tuesday, Cuteheads!

As many of you know, Pimp has been feeling a little under the weather lately. A couple weeks ago, I took him to the vet because there was a little blood in the litter box (and on his butt, so I knew it was him and not Moo) and they told us he had cystitis, which meant a swollen bladder and infection basically. Two weeks of liquid antibiotics and he should be good as new, the doc said.

The doc, as you can imagine, made this sound easy... Pimp, on the other hand, had other plans. He HATED his medicine. I had to mummify him in a giant beach towel and basically wrestle him into submission just to get the medicine down his stubborn throat.

But we did it! Yay. And two days before his follow-up visit to make sure he was all cleared up... the little stinker decided to get a small case of diarrhea. Ugh.

So back to the vet...

And back to medicine again...

This time... A PILL.

"Um, he doesn't do medicine well," I told the V-E-T. "I'm not sure I can give him a pill."

"Just try it," the doc said. "If not, come back and we'll mash it into a cherry syrup liquid."

Liquid is the better option?! Eek! Pimp already hates me for that!

So I posted my concerns (read: fear) on Facebook, and Dana of The Creek Cats came to my rescue like a beautiful, shining angel: Get Greenies Pill Pockets, she said... it's the only thing that saved her when her handsome Cal was sick.

And suddenly... there was a light shining on Pimp's pill prognosis! Pimp LOVES treats. Probably more than he loves me, but we won't go into that. I'll get these Greenies Pill Pockets, and with any luck, he won't realize there's a pill in them...

(Greenies Pill Pockets are super soft, hollow treats that you put the pill in and then close it up and give it to your cat like a normal, delicious treat.)

Cuteheads, I tell you this totally unpaid, unsolicitited and un-anything: I FREAKING LOVE THESE PILL POCKETS. Honestly, at this point, I feel like I owe Pimp's health to them. There is no way I could have given him these pills twice a day otherwise. It is truly incredible.

I put the pill in, say "Pimp! Treats!!!" and he comes running, devours the treat (and pill!) and even asks for another one! Which I happily give him, sans pill of course.

I just wanted to share with everyone in case you have to give your babies a pill ever. These Greenies Pill Pockets are a miracle!

Have a great day, everyone!

P.S. Guess what?! Pimp is on the Daily Dog Scoop today! He's helping lend a paw for Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. Go say hi!

  1. Ohhhhh yeah, we LOVE Greenies!! We just hate it that we can't get the pill pocket ones out here (wait a second... pill pocket? does that mean... pills?)

Still, we'd nom the daylights out of anything that has to do with Greenies!

  3. My Samson gets cystitis sometimes in times of stress, but thankfully he is so easy to give pills to! I think the Greenies would be great if I ever have to give a pill to Deli, though! We're sending purrs to Pimp so he gets better soon! We know that cystitis doesn't feel good!

  4. Oh Pimp, we do hope you are over this infection for good now. Medicine is yukky, but the pill pockets aren't too bad. Glad it worked well for you.

  5. That sounds like a wonderful idea except of course my cats don't like greenies - do they come in chicken flavor? They don't actually eat treats either.

  6. That Dana is sure a big help. Glad she told you about the pill pockets. I have never used them but I have heard lots of people that have. And Yay, Pimp will be getting better. I had one cat that I couldn't give pills too but she didn't have any teeth so she couldn't have done the pockets. I finally got them in her.
Have a great week and lots of purrs to Pimp to get all better.

  7. They look pretty good, but, believe it or not, if we have to have medicine all of us take pills pretty darn good here. I am so glad that Pimp is doing better!!!

  8. I am a huge fan of pill pockets but we have the issue at our house of 2 cats who don't really like them. I think Kirzon can smell the pill and Virgil doesn't even want them empty. Barney is on pills now and loves them(thank goodness). Kirzon is TERRIBLE with medicine - liquid has gotten harder and harder to give him. We ended up getting his last stuff compounded into a gel you put in his ear - it works great and he doesn't mind it at all. That is something to keep in mind in the future, should the pill pockets loose their appeal at some point!

  9. I am so sorry Pimp has been ill.
Fred had cystitis - or how ever you spell it. And it was awful.
I tend to just open the mouth and drop the pill down the throat before they know what hit 'em.
    heh

  10. My human is a big bully - when we are sick, she will just grab us out of nowhere and shove the pill down our throats! We don't even know what hit us 'til it's over. I think I like the Pill Pockets idea lots better.

  11. Oh, crud, I hate when the cats "Houdini" those pills. I don't care how I give them to the cats, they end up spitting them out somewhere. I find them in the living room, on my shirt, stuck to their faces like a Marilynne Monroe mole, on the wall, etc. I've heard there is a pill shooter that works pretty well too.

Oh, I hope my pally, Pimp, is feeling better soon!

  12. Island Cats' mom here...pill pockets are the best! Zoey loves them!! Unfortunately, not all cats like them...Wally is one of those. He won't touch them. So I have to force him to take his meds...no fun at all...for him and me!

  13. I almost bought those. Kristopher was perfect for the first 3 pills and then a terror for the remaining 12!

  14. Everyone here takes pills pretty easy but we'll keep these in mind if that should change. We hope Pimp gets better soon!

  15. I tried the pill pockets with Audrey, my gentle, sweet cat. She detected the pill with no problem. Still haven't figured out how to get her to take a pill and I've tried many things. When it comes to medication, she turns into a superhero- strong, hissing, growling beast. But she forgives me quickly.

  16. I've tried the pill shooter too--nope, not for Audrey.
