Here's Where I Ask YOU For Help (Please!)

Hey all! Today I need your help. Not for a cat, for me.

Some of you know a little bit about my "real job" and some of you don't. I know it's hard to believe, but I don't sit around watching cute cat videos all day (although wouldn't that be fun?!). For my actual career, my official title is Director of Marketing Communications Strategies, which is just fancy-pants for I send emails and am in charge of social media. It's not really that simple, of course, but that's about as easy as I can explain it.

Well, that was my title until about two weeks ago, actually. After six years with eDiets.com, it's officially my time to move on and set out for bigger and better things. I had a great time working there, learned a lot of things and met some fabulous people, but they're cutting back a lot and focusing on very specific things, and email marketing, as it turns out, wasn't one of them. I was let go, or more specifically, my "position was eliminated," but am still technically helping out for the next few weeks to help transition.

Some people would be sad about this, but I'm happy! I am excited for new challenges, a new place, new people and -- hopefully with your help! -- working for a company or cause I truly love. I would love to use my skills for some sort of pet-related company (bonus points if they have an office dog or cat).

So how can you help?

Our network of Cute followers is huge! Here is my LinkedIn profile so you can see exactly what I do (Are you on LinkedIn? Let's connect!). I've had the joy of making so many friends here, and I am hoping someone knows someone who knows someone who is hiring for my perfect position!

I am looking for something in the email marketing or social media field. I live in South Florida and am not really looking to move. I would, however, LOVE to work remote! I do my best work on my beach balcony, supervised by my two kitties.

Some job titles that might match what I can do: Director of Communications, Email Marketing Director, Email Manager, Social Media Manager, Community Manager, Content Director, Managing Editor, Senior Editor, Person With the Best Shoes in the Office.

Do any of you know anyone who might be hiring for my dream pet-related position? Or maybe you know of an awesome position in an amazing company (that isn't pet-related, but would be perfect for me!)?

If you do, please feel free to email me at my (more professional) email address: writedorian (at) gmail (dot) com with any links or info. And please feel free to pass along my LinkedIn profile page to anyone you think might be interested.

I really appreciate any help you all might have. I'm over here combing job listings every day and I just know I'll find something fabulous!

Oh, and since we're talking email, why not sign up for Your Daily Cute's emails? (Shameless plug, I know, but still!) Don't miss a Cute!

  3. If I hear or see anything I will let you know.  You should send your link today to our Purina pals, they have lots of contacts.  Also, Kritters that Twitter is always posting pet related employment.

  4. Yes, Brian, I definitely will! We have a bunch of pet contacts and I'm going to see if any of them know of something available. They're a great resource to have!

I will make sure I check out Kritters that Twitter, too!

  5. Thank you, Dima! I know not everyone will know of something, but I figure we have so many friends here -- maybe someone will! Always better to have a team of people on the lookout than just me! :)

  7. I'm in HR at my company and I know the economy is turning around because we've had a lot of turnover lately and we are hiring a lot of people. We don't have a dept. such as you have experience in, but I just want you to know that there are jobs out there!  I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job, but don't fret---things are picking up in the work force.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya! In the meantime, enjoy the free time with Pimp and Moo!

  9. So very sorry for your job loss, but I'm sure something will come along and may end up being a good thing.  Brian is right - Kritters that Twitter is always posting job postings related to pets.   I think this link should work.  She usually posts about 1 or more a week - whenever they become available.

Good luck.   I'm sure you will find something soon.   You have a good attitude, and that will help.

  14. Good luck in your job search.  Linked In seems to post a lot of positions in South Florida that are marketing/advertising related, so be sure to check that out.

  15. It's fantastic that your attitude about your career change is so good. Any pet-related company should be fighting to hire you, not just because of your passion for animals but because you're so damn good at what you do. I'll share your post on the P&E Facebook page -- maybe there are some people there who can help you. If your relationship with Catster is good, you might see if they can shake the tree for some connections, too.

Best of luck, Dorian.  If networks work like "they" say, then you should have lots of opportunities.  You are also in the "hot" area of social marketing.  I'll certainly keep watch for anything that is perfect for you!

  17. Thank you! I hope they will be fighting to hire me. :) It's just getting to the right people, and hopefully all of everyone's sharing and friends could help! I can't think of a better pet-related target group than all of us!

And I definitely appreciate the nice words. I'm really excited about the change. Things happen for a reason, and I'm sure it'll all work out for the best!

  22. Thanks, Mario! I have seen her posting before and will surely be keeping a close eye on them now. She is really great for sharing all of that with us!

  23. Dorian, I am so sorry for the cut back in your field of expertise.  I'm sure you will not be 'unemployed' very long.  You are a very active, professional and outgoing person.  What about the HALO site for advertising and promotions.  Please check them out as I'm always getting their news and, of course, the Free Kibble site for trivia questions to help feed the animals.  They (along with Ellen deGeneres) do so much for the animals supplying mega loads of food to the various shelters across the U.S. and worldwide.  Please contact them as it might be a viable site to look into.  Best of luck and I look forward to your Daily Cutes.  P.S. the picture of handsome Pimp is wonderful.  Tabbies are such sucks.  I loved my big silver boy so much to say nothing of my beautiful blue point, both of which have gone across the Rainbow Bridge sadly.

  24. Dorian - we send you lots of goat hugs as you search for a new job. Your wonderful attitude will take you very far. If we were a big goat farm we would hire you in a minute but we are a small farm :(

  25. PetMeds is in Florida - Daisy the Curly Cat' s Mom works there  and now does a once a week column for PetMeds - tho I don't think that was the job she was hired for and the column is just an extra thing she does. They have a huge social media thing going on...Just a thought...

  26. Oh no, I am sorry to hear that.  Some company will be very lucky to get you!

  27. Yes! They did have a position open not too long ago and I did speak with them, but it wasn't a perfect fit. I'll keep an eye out for others, though, for sure!

  28. Thank you! I'd take a considerable pay cut to just play with cute baby goats all day... Just saying. ;)
