Black Cats are the New Black

Black cats are all the rage, and if you don't have one, you better go out and grab one quick before they run out. Act fast! All the cool people have them...

Man, I wish this were true. Black cats are beautiful, amazing, gorgeous creatures. I have to admit I have a soft spot for them because of Daddy Meow (One of the best cats ever, and I miss him every day.), and so it breaks my heart that they have such a hard time finding homes.

They're often overlooked at shelters just because they're black. Black is boring, people think. Black has no personality and is creepy. They all look the same...

No! No! No!

Look at a black cat's eyes -- they way they're shaped, the expression, the feeling, the difference in color.

Now look at their nose -- such cute shapes! Some hearts, some triangles, some little button-noses.

Now look at their fur -- long, short, medium, soft, fluffy, maybe a little wiry. No way these cats are the same!

Now look at their personality -- this, my friends, is where they can excel. Notice how loving they are. Notice how loud they purr. Take the time to see that they are full of life, full of fun and full of cute. Don't just glance over to the next cat because they don't have cute markings or silly stripes...

Today, I want you to meet Knight. All of the pictures in this post are of him. I met him at Cats Exclusive and instantly fell in love with him. There are tons of cats there, but he stood out immediately and made his case for being the cutest. He jumped in my lap, curled up his little ebony paws and purred up a thunderous little storm.

And yet, he's been there for over a year and hasn't found a home yet. He was brought to Cats Exclusive with his mom and three brothers. They were found in a South Florida mall parking lot.

His brothers (two looked like Maine coons and one was a long-haired black boy) all found homes fairly quickly, but Knight -- with his average black-cat looks and regular, uninteresting short hair -- was left behind. (His mom is there still, as well, but she's not so much of a people person. Content to keep to herself and happy to be safe, though.)

Why is he still not adopted?! This cat is easily one of the cuddliest cats there. He deserves a home and he would make anyone the BEST companion. You want a lap cat? Knight is a lap cat! You want a loving cat? Knight is a loving cat! You want a beautiful cat? Knight is your cat in shining fur!

Knight just turned one last week -- let's give him the best birthday present ever... A HOME.

He gets along with other cats, has a calm personality and is immediately friendly to new people. He's a little camera shy, but that's OK. Trust me, he's not shy about showing you affection. :)

Please, let's not let him live out his life without a real family. He's well-cared for at Cats Exclusive, believe me, but it's not the same. He wants a house, a couch, a human's bed, a basket full of toys and a closet full of treats.

And let me sweeten the deal: Adopt Knight and I'll reimburse you for the adoption fee myself. Once you take him home and make sure it all works out (maybe after a month or so), I'll give send you over a check, signed and sealed with love from Cute! I'll And maybe I'll even send some mousies and catnip toys on his birthday and during the holidays. I spoil my favorite cats... and right now, he's one of them.

Here is Knight's Petfinder page for all the info you need. Let's Be the Change for Pets by making all the difference in the world for Knight. One pet at a time...

Note from Cute: All of Knight's photos today -- and the beautiful pictures in the days to come -- were taken by my amazing photographer friend, Stephanie, from Sonju Photography. She is a cat person like me (only maybe a little less crazy, hehe), and volunteered her time, her camera and her love to help get these gorgeous photos to help get some less adoptable cats a home! THANK YOU!

UPDATE! Am realizing I never updated this post. Knight finally got his forever home! Finally! Am amazing couple walked into Cats Exclusive a few months ago and asked about which cats were having a hard time getting adopted. They had just lost their black cat and were ready for another. They LOVED Knight, but he looked just like the one they just said goodbye to, so it would have been too hard for them. They ended up adopting another black cat who had been there for a long time, Boo Boo. Boo Boo came to Cats Exclusive with severe injuries to his tail and it had to be removed -- he is happy and perfect, if not shy, otherwise. Yay, Boo Boo!

But then... they realized they loved Knight, and decided to foster him until he found a home so that he could live in a home and not a cage. See? I told you. GREAT people! And then one thing lead to another and... FOSTER FAILURE. :) The best way to fail. And so Knight now has a forever home with a forever brother.

I love a happy ending.

  1. Yay for black cats! and what a beautiful tribute to them - I have never understood why they seem to be less favored than others. I have always had a fondness for black cats too.
Who ever adopts Knight will be a very lucky person indeed

  2. Great post! As someone who had 4 black cats at once, I can add black is simply classic (think little black dress, black tie and so on) - it sets off any decor wonderfully and you're set for Halloween (indoors only, of course)! Paws crossed for Knight!

  3. What an eloquent post in favour of Black Cats. I know Black Cat Rescue - whose blog I also subscribe to - would be standing up applauding and saying 'I SECOND THAT'. Black cats are awesome. Our Sooty was one and she was awesome. Let's get this fabulous Knight a home!!

  7. Knight is a very handsome boy. We bets he could be some lucky lady's knight in shining armor. Whiskers' black hair always sparkled in the sun, hard to explain, but we bet Knight's does too. Purring Knight finds the purrfect home soon.

  9. We love black cats too. There are two living here and they are the best. They have great personalities and are very cute and just very cuddly. It is such a shame that people don't want black cats. We sure hope that Knight finds a forever home. Great post.

  11. I agree. I volunteer at a shelter and the black cats and black and white are so overlooked. And they are the sweetest, loveable cats there. Can I use some of your wording to make up a sheet about black cats to post at my shelter???
I also found this article once and kept it. It describes all colours but I found the black most interesting..........

    Black Cat Personality
Traits that have been associated with black cats through various studies and anecdotal evidence include friendliness, loyalty, stubbornness, and a generally good-natured personality. In the case of black-and-white cats, surveys indicate that the temperament is usually placid, even, and friendly, and the cats have a tendency to be far-ranging wanderers if allowed outdoors.
Research indicates that black fur may also be associated with health benefits. Many assume that the mutation that produces black fur is selected for because it provides better camouflage. However, gene studies conducted at the U.S. National Cancer Institute have linked black fur with a gene family involved in a number of illnesses, which suggests that black cats may be more resistant to certain diseases. This theory is supported by the fact that black and black-and-white cats are more abundant than those of other fur colours in feral colonies where virus resistance would be particularly beneficial, as close proximity with other animals can easily spread disease.
Sadly, despite the fact that most studies suggest black and black-and-white cats are inclined to have the best temperaments of all coat colours, and perhaps the best health prospects as well, they are the least likely to be adopted, and many are euthanized at shelters as a result.

  12. Hi anonymous, about using the wording, I'm sure I wouldn't mind, but would you please email me at dorian (at) yourdailycute.com? I'd love to see what you put together and know where it's going.

Thank you! And I love the personality traits!

    http://whiskersandtoefloof.blogspot.com/

He was at our shelter for 6 months, and I wasn't looking for another animal, but I happened to be dropping off some supplies, and our hearts found eachother :) There will never be another one like him.. I'm glad I got to him when he was only (approx) a year old so I have LOTS of time to spend with him!

  24. Ok, I'm biased because...um, I am a black cat! And my brother Nigel is a black cat and my mom is over the moon in love with us because we are smart and loving and amazing. And my mom says 2 of our Bridge angels, Lewis and my mentor and best friend in the whole world ::bows head:: Jonathan were black cats too. Mom says we are the bestest.

We will purr for Knight! He will be someone's Knight in Shining Fur.

  28. I own two black cats, and they are the loves of my life. I just imagine their sweet faces and cheer right up. As to black cats not having a personality, there is nothing further from the truth-my youngest has some siamese in him, which I've heard is not unusual for black cats, and he has an EXCESS of personality! Not to mention the siamese meow :) The other cat is 15 years old and is a mix of about seven different breeds-he is easily the funniest looking cat I've ever had, but he's also very sweet. I do feel like I have twins and I'm the only one who can tell them apart, which is kind of fun. Give all breeds of cat a chance-they are all precious!

  29. I LOVE my black cat! She is gorgeous...I can't imagine anyone thinking those ridiculous things about them. My husband found her on the side of the road, her mother had been hit by a car and she was hiding by her. He brought her home on his motorcycle. I can't imagine life without her.

  30. My fur baby is a black cat, and she is, without question, the sweetest thing I have ever seen. You just have to look at her and she purrs, and she'll cry if anyone leaves the house. She wants to be with people, wants to be curled up in your lap or cradled in your arms like a baby. It's hard to believe that she had been found as a stray in someone's yard in the pouring rain, with a large open wound on her back that was infested with maggots. I didn't waste a minute scooping her up and taking her home.

  33. I love black cats! They are gorgeous! I never understood why some people shy away from them...and black dogs. I have two beautiful black cats that I rescued when they were kittens ten years ago. They are wonderful. And their coloring is so intense and dramatic. I love it!

  35. Blackberry is the black cat in my life right now. My friend found Blackberry living underneath her neighbor's house. She called called me because I work with county shelter rescues. Blackberry is about 8-9 so it took a while to place him, but he became the best friend of a special needs boy. Everything was perfect until they lost their home in this foreclosure mess, and so he's back with me. He's a great cat: mellow, gentle, and very intelligent--lots of personality too.

  36. Personally, I think black cats are the prettiest of kitties! And, I think they are the sweetest, too!

    1. I alreadyhave a male and not sure he would accpet him.
    2. I don't live in FL
    3. I'm trying to replace my CiCi, a black white tuxedo we lost in Aug '10.
    4. We're only allowed one cat now but, when I moved in they allowed me my two. Since she dies I have not told them since I know they won't approve another to replace her.
However, Teddy, my make Maine Coon, misses her daily! He lost his father, grandfather and house-mate all in one summer 3 1/2 yrs ago. That was traumatic, so when he lost CiCi it has really hit him hard.
His three losses were due to a flea and tick spray from Hartz! He almost died as well. Hospitalized for 2 weeks with 2 blood transfusions, it took me a year to pay the vet.
Just wish I could replace CiCi as I miss her very much.

She looks just like the cat in this picture and I wouldn't want any other cat in the world over her. So yeah it makes me sad that this cat got overlooked. They all deserve a home.

  49. My husband and I adopted a black cat that was stuck in a cage for many months because no one wanted him. He was the sweetest, most loving, funniest, gorgeous cat I've ever seen. When he died I thought the world was over. I think of him almost every day, especially at Halloween, because we didn't know when he was born (he was about 2 when we adopted him) so we made Halloween his "birthday" and made a big fuss over him. Someday we hope to adopt another black cat in his honor and love and spoil it just as much as we did for him. RIP Mackie. Mommy and Daddy miss you and love you.

  50. My husband and I have had the pleasure of sharing my home with two black cats.  Zoe was my first cat and it was love at first sight.  She was the smartest and most loving kitty either.  She would sleep curled up in my arm every night next to my side and gave me lots of love.  She left us at the age of 18 years, along with a huge hole in our hearts.   I didn't want another cat, but we had a tuxedo cat that was only two years old and really missed Zoe.  We then adopted Bella from a rescue service.  She is also a very loving cat.  She follows me every where when I'm home and curls up in my lap whenever I watch tv or read.  Black rescue cats rock!

  52. Knight is a handsome looking boy. I would love to have him as I love black cats. I live in Illinos. I also have a black cat and her name is Midnight. She is my little best friend and the little love of my life. She is a wonderful cat and very smart. She knows how to open drawers and she will give me her paw when I'm giving her treats. She amazes me on how smart she is and she is very loving and always wants to be petted and loves to sit in my lap or on my laptop. I also have her daughter Popeye (nickname Poppy) and we adopted (or he adopted us) a male cat...Peanut.

  55. A black cat adopted me 2 years ago.  I started to see this black cat around the house occasionally for about a month.  I could never get near it as it would run away.  Being that my property backs up the the Wharton State Forrest and I am the last house on the street, I just figured this black beauty was ferral.  One afternoon, I put some food out on the front step, went back in to the house and made a phone call.  After the call, I went out to see if the cat ate any of the food.  Guess what!  He was out there eating and did not run when I opened the door.  In fact, he acted like he knew me forever!.  The purring was so LOUD and the affection he displayed was over the top!  He walked right into my home acting like he belonged there.  He walked right up to my 2 cats (who of course freaked) and walked right up the my rather large dog.  This told me that whoever he was was very familiar with other animals. I called the local police department letting them know of my find, I called the animal warden, I called local veterinarians, I posted on Craigs List and placed an ad in the newspaper.  No one came forward!  After about 2 weeks, I took him to the vet and it was discovered that he had a chip.  Yea!!!  I was going to find his family!  Nope, the chip told us that he came from a shelter in North Carolina (I live in NJ).  The vet called the shelter in NC and they were able to tell us that the cat was with them during his first year of life and then was adoped by a person who I will not mention, they gave me 2 phone numbers for this person and an e-mail address and they told me his name was Abner and that he was now 2 years old.
Both phone numbers were no longer in service and the e-mail address did not work.  Abner has been mine now for 2 years and I have got to say, I don't know why I never had a black cat before.  His behavior is more like a little dog.  He is smart, affectionate, obediant and so so loving.  What a loss for the person who just dismissed him and what a find for me and my husband!  We just love the crap out of him.

Yes, that's what happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I've been fostering for shelters in South Central Michigan for a few years now, with dozens of successful fosters/adoptions. But this little girl spoke to me - she's black, of course, and the most affectionate, sweet, beautiful little black girl kitten you could ever see. I've had her since she was 3 wks old. We lost her brother due to diseases (several of them), but she got better and she lives with me, now. Foster failure!! Yeah!

  64. I just adopted my first black cat Saber..as we were taking him to the visitors room we passed a few other Kitties in cages he hissed..not enough to fight but like to say "these are my people".. I knew then he would keep my 6 year old moggie tux Peaches in line. First thing Saber did was attack the scratching posts, climb the trees, and bat around as many balls as he could and nip me playfully as he was passing by..thus the nickname sabertooth. This is also how Peaches plays. When it came time to go, my daughter called to him.. He ignored her.. When I called.. He came to me for a scritch under the chin and I picked him up. I didn't want to put him back in that little cage and he knew it and fussed. My daughter did the necessary cage job, and I went to fill out papers. Monday he's mine.
