Why You Shouldn't Adopt a Kitten

Kitten season is officially here, and I'm telling you not to adopt a kitten. Am I crazy? Maybe.

But here the thing about kittens: They're a handful. Kittens are like out-of-control toddlers who are small enough to hide behind your refrigerator or behind that box in the back of your closet or in some crevice you didn't know existed -- just to give you a panic attack that you lost them. They never stop, which means you have to constantly play with them, or else risk losing all your iPhone charger cords to them because they think they're toys (this will probably happen anyway).

And their claws are like little needles. Kittens have the sharpest pin-point daggers. If you have a kitten, everyone will know it because your arms and probably the bottom half of your legs will show them (did I mention they climb your legs like trees?).

The shelters are about to be overflowing with cuddly, adorable, cute kittens, and I'm telling you not to adopt them. You know why?

Because it's the adult cats who are going to lose out. The kittens will get adopted. No matter what, there are always people who are convinced they want a little baby and go in with blinders, seeing only them.

But the adult cats in the shelter... they sit and wait and get ignored. And because of the sheer number of kittens coming in now, and how much more "adoptable" they are, the adult cats get dealt the "urgent" card first, and unfortunately faster than usual since shelters need more space during kitten season.

This amazing lion is at Cats Exclusive in Margate, FL. If you went in looking for just tiny kittens, you'd miss out on this masterpiece! He and several other GORGEOUS cats just found themselves there after their mom (a breeder) passed away.

You know what else? An adult cat has manners. He's gotten out of his cyclone kitten stage. He probably won't climb your curtains. Chances are he'll know better than to get on your kitchen counters. He'll sleep through the night. He'll still play, but he'll also let you watch TV, put on your sweatpants without playing with the waist string and he won't eat your Apple chargers. He can't fit behind the refrigerator, so you won't lose track of him, and he'll have grown out of that needle-claw age.

An adult cat will still be with you for lots of years, and has lots of love to give. You get a great cat, without having to literally raise a child and teach him everything from scratch. And he'll love you just as much as a tiny kitten would... if not more.

Moo became part of my family when he was about a year and a half old. I wonder about his kitten years, but I don't feel like I missed out on a thing! He's perfect!

He'll curl up in bed with you at night and meet you at the door when you get home and play with toys and lie on comfy cat beds and look adorable sitting on your couch, just like a kitten. He'll do cute things and be fluffy and soft and sweet, and he'll be even more grateful to be in your home. He is old enough to know he was "dumped" at the shelter, and old enough to know how lucky he is that you picked him.

So let those stubborn people who don't know any better adopt the rugrat kittens. Spread the word and tell your friends: Adult cats are where it's at!

Meet Sugar! He's at Good Karma Pet Rescue in South Florida. Sugar's name is quite appropriate since he is exactly that - sweet as sugar! He's just the nicest kitty. Sugar is about two years old. He's gets along well with other cats and is just such a love. We can't wait to see this handsome boy find his forever home. He has a long life ahead of him and he deserves to spend it with a loving family!

P.S. Cute is back! Thanks to everyone for understanding my much-needed break. It was great! I did a little thinking, and while the Cute will still be about cute cat videos, it will also be about other cute things and a little more writing. I love cute cat videos, but after almost 6 years of them, it's time for to mix in a little change. I love writing, so more of that it is! And cute cat videos, of course. And Three Cats Thursday! Plus, Pimp, Moo and Phantom will probably be making even more appearances!

Transport Happy Ending Photos (Hurray!) and a Little Bit of a Break

This past weekend we had another wonderful transport going on! Lots of kitties went to their forever homes all over the place!

I didn't share as much throughout as normal, so I wanted to share the best part... the new forever home pictures!

And last but not least... old lady Gwen and her amazing new forever mom, Cutehead Karen R., in Maryland!

Remember the story of old lady Gwen, the old cat who's elderly owner surrendered her to the shelter in such a sad way that we jumped into action to save her? She is now safe and sound and will be spoiled!

Gwen's is one of my favorite rescue stories ever. Ever ever ever.

And about that break...

There is nothing more fulfilling that helping these kitties. I love all the people and all the lives we save, and we'll keep doing it!

But for now I'm going to take just a little break. The Cute will be back next week! I just need to take a few days and relax and do a little bit of nothing.

Man Finds Out His Cat Has Cancer and Makes Her a Bucket List

When one amazing cat dad found out his cat, Ella, was diagnosed with cancer, he didn't mourn or get sad. Instead he made her a bucket list so she could have the most wonderful experiences in the time she had left!

Ella was adopted from the shelter as an adult cat after living there for years. Her human daddy and his roommate fell in love with her, and just knew she was the one they'd take home. But after just a few months of her living with them, they learned she had terminal cancer.

The first reaction was to be happy that they gave her the loving home she so much deserves in her final months. And the second was to make her life the best one ever. I love this!


GREAT UPDATE: Yay! Ella's daddy, Stephen, left us a comment down below saying this:

"Hello -- Stephen, Ella's human here! I actually recorded a short video update that should be linked in the main video. Spoiler alert: A new vet and a new round of x-rays and blood work revealed that Ella's cancer is more self-contained than we thought, and she has an optimistic outlook of a good few years left! Definitely made my year to learn that recently. Thanks for watching :)"

Hurray for Ella! Hopefully we'll get to see more cute videos of her as she enjoys her bucket list!

I Don't Know If It's Three Cats Thursday.

Before you jump to comment (I know what you all think!), just read me out.

I love Phantom. He is quite possibly the best cat ever... and I have two amazing cats! But Phantom is special. This boy is the sweetest, most innocent and adorable and angelic thing ever. Who knows what happened to him in his life, but he just still loves everything.

He chirps and loves and follows me around like a puppy. He's so soft. His eyes are so gorgeous. His personality will just melt you.

Phantom wasn't sure about this picture.

But I've been doing a lot of thinking lately (sometimes I over-think, I get that from my dad) and I'm just not sure that Phantom is the third cat I never wanted. I feel like maybe I'm just trying to replace Sweet Pea.

Sweet Pea was my third cat. I knew that with everything I had. There was no question. What I felt for her I'm not sure I'll feel about any kitty again.

And, unfortunately, Phantom is not Pea.

I love him. I just don't know if he's truly my third cat. You know what I mean? I hope this is making sense.

All sassy-like after his first bath. 

I was reading through old posts from when we lost Pea, and she was just so special. I resisted a third cat for so many years. So many. Sweet Pea was the only one who could change my mind, and even she almost didn't.

And now we have Phantom here. Moo doesn't like him, and Pimp is usually indifferent, but sometimes hisses. Phantom wants all the love in the world, and literally throws temper tantrums when he's not getting it. It's absurdly adorable. He breaks my heart.

But I'm not sure if he breaks it enough to be my third cat.

I'm so torn. And at this point, I couldn't just adopt him to just anyone. It would have to be someone I know and trust with what could very easily be my own child. He'd love anything and everything, I'm sure -- cats, dogs, people, kids.

Melt. 

He is amazing. I truly think he should be a therapy cat. (I looked into it!) He should be sitting on hospital beds with children in pediatric care units and with elderly folks in nursing homes. He could bring joy and peace to any place, and he'd sit on a lap and purr for hours without complaint or want to move.

But I'm just not sure he's mine.

No clue what to do. :(

P.S. His leg is so much better! Still swagger, but he's walking on his foot just fine!

It Takes a Village: The Story of One Old Cat

Yesterday, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across a story that moved me so much that I immediately moved into action. My friend, Chris, had been at the shelter when an old man was surrendering his old cat, and the scene was something she just couldn't shake. It was so sad and so touching.

She was picking up a foster dog at the time and had her hands full, but she shared it on Facebook, where I saw it. I'm not sure I even got halfway through before I myself was in tears, ready to move mountains and leap buildings to help this cat.

After reading her post and doing some digging, I posted this below on my personal Facebook page -- and the response was overwhelming and amazing.

Here is what I posted:

Yesterday, a friend of mine was at the Palm Beach shelter picking up a foster dog when she saw an elderly man surrendering his cat. Her name was Gwen, he told them, and is between 10-13 years old and black. The poor, sweet man had even brought her a bag of dry food and three cans of wet food. My friend said he didn't seem like he could afford much, so this was probably everything in the world he could do for the old girl. It was like he was dropping her off for boarding, she said. He probably thought she'd be safe.

My friend, Chris Dominick, couldn't shake what she'd seen, but couldn't take the cat then. So she went to the Urgent Cats of Palm Beach County page and posted what she saw, hoping the old cat could be identified, and someone might be able to help her.

I read her post as was just as torn apart as she was. So I picked up the phone and called the shelter, trying to find Gwen. She wasn't listed on any of their websites, so I was hoping she was just not put up yet.

They first told me it would be nearly impossible to track her down with what little we knew. They get like 50 animals a day, and surrender times aren't listed. She'd have to go through them one by one... I told her the story, and she started to melt and told me to hold on.

When she came back on the phone, she was already combing through intake records -- and we found Gwen! There was just one problem: Her notes said that she was friendly when she was first taken out of her carrier, but hissed and swatted at the vet when they tried to draw blood to process her (of course she did; it's a loud scary shelter!), and so because of that and her "geriatric" age, she could not go into the adoption program.

Basically, she'd be put down that night if I hadn't called. We reached them with maybe 30 minutes to spare.

She asked if I was interested in adopting her, and that if I was they could put a note in her file and keep her for ONE more day, max. I told her that I wanted to work to rescue her, and that if they gave me that day, I could make it happen.

And so my name is in her file now. And Gwen has until they close tomorrow, 2/12/14, to have a plan.

Can anyone adopt her? We can transport!

If not, can anyone local (Broward County, ideally) foster her for a few weeks while we work it out?

We can't let Gwen down. As many cats as we help, I rarely pick up the phone to call the shelter about them. But her story just moved me to tears and shattered me.

Can we please save her? Share far and wide!

She is at Palm Beach Animal Control. Her ID # is 1719429. We can transport her to a good home.

That old man thought he was doing what was best for his Gwen... Let's make it come true, shall we?

Within an hour, there were nearly 100 shares and the most heart-warming comments. Bottom line: Gwen has a local foster (think you Cutehead Kyle S.) and hopefully an adopter and/or rescue backup.

I emailed the shelter to let them know, and if all goes according to plan, we should be able to get her out safe today! I will post when she is out for sure!

All paws crossed for Gwen until she's officially busted out, OK? Thanks, Cuteheads! I hope we can work a miracle for this old, sweet girl (and her sweet old former owner!). Huge thank you to Chris for telling this old girl's story so we could all work together for her!

P.S. We can make these amazing things happen because of the amazing group of friends we have here! I can never feel grateful enough. Everyone is just so nice!

UPDATE 10:14am: Just got off the phone with the shelter to confirm she's still there and let them know we 100% will get her out (wanted to make sure nothing bad happened!), and she's still there! Working out the details on how we'll get her out. Will continue to update when she's safe!

11:10am: Cutehead Leslie W. is going to head over to bust Gwen out in the next couple hours! She'll go to our vet, Dr. Simon's Pet Clinic, and then to foster with Cutehead Kyle S. tonight! I'll keep updating... Still looking for adopter.

12:05pm: Leslie is on her way to bust Gwen out right now! Thank you to Good Karma Pet Rescue of South Florida  for stepping up to help her while we work out her adopter and transport!

2:30pm: GWEN IS SAFE! Yeah! Here is her freedom photo. And she is absolutely gorgeous! She will go to foster tonight while we work out her plan. What amazing teamwork today!

3/8/14: Gwen is on her transport to her new mom, Cutehead Karen R. is Maryland right now! YES!

Our Biggest Transport Weekend Ever! 25 Cats, 32 Drivers, 3,894 Miles! #shitloadofcats

This past weekend was what I'm calling the "Mother of All Transport Weekends" -- it was our biggest and best transport weekend ever! We had kitties going all over the place!

There were a total of 25 cats, all saved and rescued, that traveled all over the country! An amazing crew of 32 different Cutehead drivers worked together on this super exciting weekend -- with some super adorable kitties aboard!

Most of the cats were saved from Broward Animal Control in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They were transported to rescues in Wisconsin, Illinois, Rhode Island and Maine! Gorgeous cats, cuddly kittens, a sweet FIV+ kitty and even an adorable FeLV girl -- all safe and sound because of our fellow Cuteheads and rescue partners!

Most of the cats are all done traveling as of last night, but there are a few of them camping out in St. Louis, MO for the week, and they'll do their last part of their journey to Wisconsin next Saturday. It is a three-day trip for them total!

It was so many cats, there was only one hashtag we could think of... #shitloadofcats!

Whoa! That's a whole lot of cuteness, isn't it? So happy we could be a part in saving all these wonderful, cute, loving and deserving kitties!

Plus, to make things even more fun, each of our drivers had one of these window signs to put in their car while they were driving their leg!

My New Transport Foster Kitten -- Phantom!

Oh, the cuteness continues! I am pretty sure that my spare bathroom could easily be considered one of the cutest places on Earth in the past few months... There is always some cutie in there!

The latest adorable thing to bless me with its presence is Phantom, a super sweet 10-month-old kitten that we rescued from Broward County Animal Control. Phantom was THISCLOSE to being out of time, but we swooped him out of there just in time!

He has white whiskers mixed in with the black on one side of his face... So he is Phantom!

Phantom also has some kind of issue with one of his back legs. The shelter vet thinks it's some kind of nerve damage, but it doesn't seem to faze him at all! He walks with one leg kind of bent at the knee, like he walking on his calf. It all just goes flat on the floor. But he still jumps and loves and plays -- nothing is wrong as far as he is concerned!


He is also extremely hard to get a good picture of, because he's constantly rubbing on me for love or coming at me to ask for more love. Sit still, Phantom!

I'm sure there will be tons more pictures of him coming soon. I just wanted you all to meet him real quick. I love, love, love him and I'm so glad we could save him. I have been hoping and sharing for almost two weeks!

THREE Cats Tuesday: Wait... What is This About a Third Cat?!

Happy Three Cats Tuesday, Cuteheads! Three cats, you ask? It's not just Pimp and Moo? Nope... there's a third cat in the house, folks.

And her name is Sweet Pea.

Before you get all excited, she's not a permanent resident (I'm fighting that single-with-three-cats tipping point with all it's worth, OK?), but she is getting really comfortable really fast.

But first, let's start out with the two heads of the household, Big Pimpin' and Maniac Moo! They did something different this week -- synchronized cat napping!

We are mirror images of each other... except stripes and spots.

And now on to miss Sweet Pea. As you may recall, I flew to Pittsburgh with her last week to see about a forever home for her. Unfortunately, it wasn't a perfect match and Pea is back at my house. Which is not a horrible thing, of course -- she's an absolute angel. But it does mean we'll be on the hunt for a new home for her again soon.

Sweet Pea is blowing me away with how immediately comfortable she is in the house. After being in a parking lot for 13 years, this is incredible! She gets on the couch, curls up and just purrs and purrs. She likes to give headbutts, have her belly rubbed and make biscuits on you. It's amazing!

She trusts me, so this was easy. She will need someone with patience and time so that she can learn to trust them too and come out of her shell. She will hide at first (so she needs a home with a place she can be with no hidey spots at first), but will purr when you reach in and pet her. She would also like a quiet place, with preferably no other cats or maybe another older, calm cat. I have no doubt she'll be an awesome cat for the right person -- preferably local to the South Florida area so we can check in on her.

Transport Day: 7 Cats With Homes in 5 Different States! #7catcaravan

Hurray for transport day! This weekend we're heading up the entire east coast and dropping a whole bunch of kitties off all along the way!

Let's meet each one of them and get to know them, shall we?

Fiona

Fiona was rescued from Broward Animal Control with her babies. They were all very sick, and unfortunately her babies did not make it, despite tons of care from their foster mom, Cutehead Rita A. Fiona, however, she came through like a champ. There were a couple times where Rita thought Fiona might not make it, but both of them are fighters, and she pulled through!

Now she is a gorgeous girl who got her lucky break thanks to a connection between fellow Cutehead Robin O. of Covered in Cat Hair and her friend Birgit F. in Jacksonville, FL. Birgit had messaged her about adopting a kitty and Robin pointed her our way... and the rest is history. Fiona is a lucky girl!

Charlie

Charlie was dumped at a vet's office in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He tested positive for both FIV and Feline Leukemia, and the person requested he be put down. But Charlie is such a sweet cat that the vet just didn't have the heart to do it. So when Cutehead Maribel M. walked in to the office and the vet led her back to meet "someone special"... she of course immediately fell in love with him, and agreed with the vet's decision.

Enter Rikki's Refuge, a wonderful place in Virginia. They agreed to take Charlie in and hopefully find him a home. And if not, they will love him for life. He is a special boy!

Pepper was originally rescued with his sister, Cocoa, from Broward Animal Control a few months ago. Poor Cocoa got sick and did not make it, but Pepper grew big and strong -- and super sweet! Pepper's foster mom says he is one of the sweetest cats she's ever fostered!

He was supposed to head up on a previous transport last month, but was a little sick, so we held him back to be safe. Today he is ready to hit the road with the rest of the herd and go to his new mom, Cutehead Lin F. in Virginia!

Batgirl

Batgirl was dumped at my dad's office building parking lot. There was a cat there that he'd been feeding for years, and we think someone just thought it would be "okay" to put a kitten there also. As if this baby would be fine because the other cat was. Not true!

My fabulous dad jumped into action, got a trap and got the little black baby safe. One look at her and we knew her name was Batgirl. Look at the size of those ears! She has been in foster with a coworker of his, Cutehead Ashlea M., and now she gets to head up to her new mom, Meredith D. in New Jersey!

Freeda

Freeda was rescued from Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa, FL. Her time was just about up, and she was saved at the very last minute! She is a gorgeous sweetheart, who got the gift of a second chance at life just in the nick of time!

Cuteheads Maribel M. and Kd P. worked together to pull this one off, and her new mom, Patty P. in New Hampshire is the amazing person who made it all happen! Freeda truly had no time left, and now she has all the time in the world!

Frita and Sweet Pea

Frita was part of the Ginger Nuggets that we transported to HART of Maine a while back. She was a little sick then, and not ready to travel yet, so we held her back until the next transport.

While she was getting healthy, she happened to become best friends with another kitty who was sick at the time (Sweet Pea nearly died and was forcefed for two weeks till she got better), and the two of them got healthy together -- and got to be BFF 4 Ever! And so when it came time for Frita to head up to HART, we just couldn't let her go without Sweet Pea... so Sweet Pea is hitching a ride too and the two of them are going together!
