Most Amazing Cat Agility Ever!

Cashmere and Puffy are some of the most talented (and in shape!) cats I've ever seen. These two fabulous felines do all kinds of crazy cat agility stunts!

They jump over super-tall walls and over poles that keep getting higher and higher. They run through tunnels and hop, hop, hop over stuff as fast as I've ever seen a kitty move -- and all without knocking anything over!

I'm just amazed by cat agility. I get excited when one of my cats simply comes when I call them or gets off the table if I say so... Heh.

NOTE FROM CUTE: Thursday is the absolute last day to donate to Santa Paws Drive! 1. Not only are the cats amazingly agile, the love and care invested in their training must have been immense. Well done that young guy!

  13. You know, with cats it's not 'training'. It's teaching. Training is something they do to YOU.
Kitties really like to be good. When you say "good girl!", they squint their eyes and blink at you because they love you. You just have to explain to them what you want them to do. And if it's fun, they'll do it!

People always laugh at me when I say I explain things to my cats, but I've found that with some direction (pointing, patting, etc.) while you're talking in a normal tone of voice, they can understand what you want or don't want them to do, and they'll do it because they love you. It's just not that hard. I once lived in a house where there was one couch that was awful and we never used it. I told the cats to scratch on it, but never on any other furniture. And they did. I swear to you - they only used that one couch. And I was running a kind of roaming-cat-first-aid station out of my back door. So sometimes, we had guests, and the resident cats would teach the guests about the couch, too. Truly.

You have to have a really good relationship with the kitties.

  14. What a great video. I wonder what made this young man decide to "train" his kitties. All are very talented !! My little Venus would be great at this !!!!

  15. That all sounds wonderful, Alice! Sometimes I wish Moo would listen more... Hehe. They do know what is good and bad, though, Kitties are very smart.

  16. They ARE smart! And one other thing - you can tell them, for example, not to get up on the kitchen counter. And they'll appear to be complying with your rule, but you'll discover, by some forensic evidence, that they've been up there at night when you're not watching them. And they act so damn innocent!
I think compliance, or fake-compliance, depends on the cat's personality.

  17. It would be fun to train my cats to do this, but I don't know who is lazier... me or the cats. ;) Was nice to see that one of the cats in the video is black and white and enormous, like my Holly.

  19. My cat, Minnie, was living illegally in my apartment (since been made legal) when I HAD to go to the emergency room/. The EMS people scared her so she hid. I didn't know how long I'd be gone, & a litter box would have exposed her to the manager, so I had none, & was forced to leave her IN for what might become weeks! As the EMS wheeled me out strapped to a gurney, I called out to tell Minnie to "'go' in the tub if (she) had to go." She DID! Much longer story, but the point is, SHE UNDERSTOOD ME!

  20. Great story! Thanks for sharing.
I have an acquaintance who is exasperated because her cat is 'naughty'. It turns out that she yells at the cat when he goes near her knick knacks, or tries to open the door to the basement, and so forth. I tried to tell her to stop yelling (because all that does is teach him to avoid HER) and just explain it to him. I demonstrated for her. We were in the basement getting some stuff out of storage, and the kitty was not allowed to be down there because there was too much stuff down there for him to get into. Well, the cat came down the stairs silently and prepared to explore. I didn't tell his kittymom; I just whispered to him that I wanted him to stay in my sight at all times and not to touch anything. He was good as gold!!! And I'm not even his kittymom.
My acquaintance was flabbgergasted, and when it was time to go upstairs, I simply told him to do so, and up he went.
Yelling does no good. First, you explain, especially patting and pointing to help with the words. If the behavior is repeated often, you might resort to the squirt bottle. And by that time, you have to start wondering why he does that behavior, if there's an emotional reason for it.
It's not terribly difficult. You DO have to be consistent, or they'll get confused.
I've had cats, rescue & feral cats in and out of my house for decades, and scratching the furniture was only a problem with one cat one time. I get good results, but I'm not special. Anyone can do it.
