Baby Otter Squeaks When Introduced to Water

I guess we all probably squeak a little when we first dip into a pool or put our toes in the water to check the temperature of a bath or shower. Otters are just the same, it seems!

After being abandoned by her mother off the coast of California, Otter 501 (that's what they called her) was rescued and brought to Monterey Bay Aquarium to grow up big and strong and be released back into the wild. Here in this video, she gets a little snack of milk and then gets to go for the cutest little happy swim!

Oh my gosh! Is that just the cutest thing! It just lays there on it's back, gets picked up, doesn't change position, eats in the same position, carried to the water and floated, all in the same position! Makes you wonder if they do that in the wild, doesn't it??

  2. From what I've seen about otters, the moms carry the baby (babies) on their tummies while in their back so it's a natural position for them. This way they protect the baby.

  5. We went to the local zoo and aquarium last year and they had a baby otter swimming around in his kiddie pool and he was just happy as could be, squeaking just like that and going round in circles. Too cute!

  7. Awwww. How come they wear that get-up? I'm guessing the face covering to keep them from bonding with humans????

she seemed a little subdued--I thought she would be more excited about the water.
