Meet My Next Cat!

I have no idea when I will get my next cat, but I already have him picked out. My next cat is going to be the plainest looking cat I can find. His kitten years will be long behind him. Plenty of people have seen him, but they probably haven't noticed him.

My next cat is going to be a black cat.

He's going to be an older cat, at least two or three years old. One who has been passed up over and over again at the shelter for a fluffier, younger kitty with pretty markings. Their loss, really.

My next cat is going to be perfect.

His name is going to be whatever his name is already at the shelter. He's been called that for years, and he knows it. I'm not here to change him; I'll just be there to make his dream of having a forever home come true.

Did you know today is Black Cat Appreciation Day? This is my kind of day! Cuteheads who have been reading for a while, know how much I love black cats. Love. I wish there was a stronger word.

Remember Knight, who I wrote about last year for "Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week?" That's him in the picture with me on the left. I got the BEST news about him a couple weeks ago. He has a forever home. Finally! His new family is so lucky. (He probably would have been my next cat if he was at the shelter much longer. He was breaking my heart in there!)

And remember The Meows? Daddy Meow was my first black cat true love. Man, that was the best cat. He's the one who made me realize how amazing black cats are. I think it was his eyes and his expressions when he looked at me. Love.

Black cats are the best! Leave a comment below if you agree and let's celebrate them!

  6. My best friend when I was growing up was Timothy Inkspot who was black with a white patch on his chest. He heard all my secrets, and let me dress him up in doll clothes on the front lawn in a huge cardboard box of a playhouse. No, he didn't really like it, but he liked me well enough to put up with it, and I loved him back with all my heart.

  7. My father's first cat, picked out at a pet store, I believe, was a little black kitten, who he named Natasha. She was a very smart cat, and she grew up to be sleek and strong. I still miss her. So does he.

  11. Moogie, our "new kid", is absolutely jet black - nary a trace of another color. He is sleek, soft, cuddly, and a talker. He's about two years old - twice rescued - and will be in our family forever. We love him.

  14. My first cat was a black and white tuxedo named Morgan LeFur (I was reading the King Arthur legends, thought he was a she and . . . well, it's a good thing Morgan is a unisex name!). He was a great cat! I'd get another black kitty again in a heart beat.

  15. I have 7 cats and 3 of them are black: Thumper, a long-haired CH-cat; Henry, a 20 lb. wussie cat; and Stanley, a tuxedo cat.  Henry is afraid of everybody and everything...even though he's huge!!  Love my black cats...love all my cats.

  17. Great post, Dorian! I adore black cats too! My foster Shadow, who was adopted a few weeks ago, became great friends w/another Texas CARES kitty named Twinkle. Twinkle was the sweetest black cat. They were inseparable!! And the wonderful lady who adopted Shadow, saw the great connection and love between these 2 and adopted them both!!!

  18. I don't understand how people can overlook or be mean to black cats. They're absolutely wonderful! I have two beautiful blackies with such sweet personalities. Both were rescues. They do tend to boss the other kitties around, but that's ok. I'll gladly take another blackie if the opportunity arises...

  19. I have three little black cats - I found them as kittens in my backyard and when winter came I just couldn't leave them out there. One of them - Willis - is the most awesome cat ever. If he had thumbs he would be well on his way to world domination by now. Blazen is shyer and prefers to stay out of the spotlight and Storm is a bit of a bully but loves to be petted and likes to sleep on laps. I wouldn't trade any of them for anything!

  20. I've got my eye on a few of the black kittehs at the shelter I volunteer at!  I think one or more of them will be my next bosses.  There is an absolutely stunning all-black long-hair named Chewy (yes for Chewbacca, he was one of the Star Wars litter)...he is SOO lovable and soft soft soft!

  21. I forgot to mention that the Back in Black adoption event is happening this month. Some shelters/rescues have 50% off adoption fees for black animals. You can check out this link to find one near you: http://events.bestfriends.org/upcoming/backinblack

  22. I do love black cats. I've had two: Tammy, who died 2 years ago aged 20, and I now have Pyincess Merlyn, who is black and fluffy. They have their own personality, different to other cats.

  25. Black cats are awesome. I had one named Bear for years. He was like one of my kids. He and my son used to fight over who got to sleep on the edge of the bed. Bear usually won. :)

  26. This is exactly what I did with my most recent kitty.  Figaro is a black and white tuxedo cat who had been at the shelter for months.  He is about 2 years old.  He was actually in a foster home when I adopted him.  I kept his name as Figaro.  He is the sweetest little boy.

  27. My story of Andre is exactly what you are wanting to do. Andre was 7 months when I got him but had already been down a long road. He was found as a stray & lived at the shelter. He was adopted & then returned to the shelter. How heartbreaking is that? Every time i think about it I want to cry. But, he is my sweet little tuxedo kitty & is in his forever home. And, his name is the same name he had when I adopted him. He had a friend & someone had written on the page the shelter gave me about his background they should be adopted together. I asked about Andre's friend & someone had already adopted him. It made me happy that he was already in a forever home but sad at the same time that Andre was left w/out his friend. So, that only made me even happier that he & I were brought together. He is my world!!!

  30. There have been many sweet black beauties in my life.... Elijah, Midnight, Moonlight, Bojangles, Chessie, Bistat and others.  We now have two black cats among our nine.... Memphis and Ouiji.  We absolutely adore them.  Black cats were about all I ever adopted until cats started finding us instead of the other way around, lol.  Our two little girls are full of personality and spunk.  You can't help but LOVE them!!!

  31. I have to be honest... I love ALL cats, have a special place in my heart for cats with character and to be honest, the black cats I have had in my life have had more than their share. A black queen I had many years ago chased dobermans!  Her son trained himself to use the loo... no kitty litter for him!
My last was many years ago and had more personality than all the rest put together... Wink LOVED me... my husband was only allowed in my life because the cat liked him (as much as he liked any man!) He had the worst sense of balance of any cat I ever had, frequently rolling off the back of the chair and then 'blaming' anyone or thing that happened by!  All except ME! And he had real catitude!!!!   He loved my youngest daughter just as much... she was his baby and he would allow her to do things that no one else could... including dressing him in dolls clothes and walking him in her pram. We only had him for a little over 8 years but he left a lasting place in our hearts.

  33. I agree!  My angel girl Taylor was a real sweet fluffy black cat with just a splash of white on her chest. :)  One day I'll have another black cat, that is for sure!

  34. When my mom was looking to adopt another cat, she heard that black cats were often passed over at the shelters and she made a point of looking only for a black cat.  She got really lucky...she found me!!  And she says that adopting me was one of the best things she ever did!!

  39. I adopted a black cat today!!!! YAY!!!
I was fostering her for the shelter, but due to some nasty things like illness and moving house and her brother dying, she became very shy, awkward and needy. She needs to be within a couple of feet of me at all times. And since I bottle-fed her from 3 weeks on, she believes I am her mother.
So today, we made it legal. I now have a cat of my own.
Her name is Isabella, and she has assured me that any future fostering will be just fine, no problem for her, as long as I remind her occasionally that she was here before they came, and will be there after they leave.
I must have fostered something like 35 kittens for two shelters here locally, but this is the first time I've been so strongly tempted to keep one. Usually, I take them back to the shelter when they're big enough, take them out of my crate, and pat their little bottoms. "There you go," I say, "Have a nice life in your new forever home."
But Isabella is not going to do that. This IS her forever home.
    I'm so glad!

  40.  Good for you, Ernie! Sounds like you've won the lottery.

Your Mom must be the best Mom ever. And you ARE good luck for her.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly!
When a beloved kitty passed away, we went to the shelter to get a new one when it was time to start recovering. We had already decided to get a black one as a kind of memorial to the one who had passed away. But we learned that day that black adult cats are seldom adopted. Why? I STILL don't get it. Anyway, we did, and never regretted it.
Decades later - I now have a black kitty. She came to me at age 3 weeks as a foster, but we bonded.

Color just doesn't matter. You know, cats have to be able to see that some are black and some are other colors; they must be aware of it. But it never matters in any way.

You are correct that adults have lost their cute, but they already have good manners and will not, for example, swing like a monkey from your curtain rods; you will not have to teach her where to sharpen her claws; she will not need stimulating play all damn day long; and loving and giving comfort is at the top of her list of things to do.
